Baxters of Framlingham

Framlingham

Framlingham is a market town with a long history. A reference to the town appears in the Doomsday Book of 1086, consisting of several manors. Framlingham was the homes of the first Dukes of Norfolk, who built the two castles, the first in 1100. The second was built on the same sight between 1190 and 1210 and was the first curtained walled castle in East Anglia. Mary Tudor was resident in the castle when she was declared Queen of England in July 1553. The church is dedicated to St Michael and was built in the fourteenth century. Parish registers date back to the Tudor times.

A substantial Brick and Tiled Dwelling House situated in Leiston, and in the occupation of Mr Jonathan Baxter, the proprietor; comprising a vestibule, keeping room; parlour with a good closet, kitchen, wash house, pantry, storeroom, good dry cellar, 5 sleeping rooms, and 3 attics, (with detached buildings for stable, chaise house, coalhouse and granary) a large walled garden with various excellent fruit-trees, wooden pump with good spring water, and 2 ½ acres of rich pasture land (more or less). The above premises are very pleasantly situated; distant 4 miles from Aldeburgh, and 2 from sea, of which they command a most beautiful prospect. The Ipswich Journal	01 Sep 1810	Estate By Robert Cana, At the White Horse Inn, Leiston, on Wednesday, the 12th September, at 4 o’clock A compact Estate, containing Thirty-five Acres, (more or less) of uncommon productive arable land, (exclusive of what will be allotted by the Commissioners executing the Act of Parliament for enclosing Theberton Common on which thus estate claims a right upon 11 Acres) dwelling house in good repair, neatly fitted up, parlour, kitchen, pantry, 5 chambers, recently erected, backhouse, dairy, warehouse, barn stable and cart lodge, the whole in the occupation of Mr JONATHAN BAXTER, the proprietor, desirably situate at Leiston, a pleasant village, and a sporting part of the country, abundantly stored with game, within 4 miles of Saxmundham, and 5 of the borough of Aldeburgh. 3 Acres copyhold on the manor of Leiston, the remainder on the manor of Knodishall. Christopher Baxter (1759 – 1843)

Christopher moved from Framlingham and lived in Sweffling before settling in Benhall.

Marriage

Christopher married twice. His first wife was Sarah Linstead (1756 – 1795) the daughter of William and Sarah Linstead. From the parish registers of Rendham:
“Christopher Baxter of this parish single man and Sarah Linstead of the same parish single woman were married in this church by banns, this twenty-seventh day of February 1787. In the presence of Saml: Linstead and Robert Garrard.”

His second wife was Rachel Fiske (1769 – 1849) the daughter of Henry Fiske and Elizabeth Mann, who he married on the 30th November, 1795, Sweffling.

Joseph Baxter (1770 – 1856)

Like his brother Jonathan, Joseph settles in Leiston. It is possible that he is the Mr Joseph Baxter publican of The Vulcan Arms in 1844, Leiston.

Marriage

Joseph married Sarah Button(1768 – 1842). According to the parish registers of Leiston banns of marriage between Joseph Baxter single man of the parish and Sarah Button single woman of Iken were read out between the 20th September and 4th October, 1789. The couple married at Iken on the 19thOctober, 1789.

The Ipswich Journal	10 Apr 1847	To be sold by Auction By Samuel Flick Wed 14th April Will be sold By direction of the Proprietor, Mr Joseph Baxter, in one lot A substantial brick built and sash-fronted Dwelling-house, pleasantly situated at Sizewell, near Leiston, commanding an extensive sea view, with half an acre, more or less of garden ground, and a hoarded and plastered cottage adjoining, in the respective occupation of Thomas Bicker, John Bicker and James Morley. These premises are freehold.
The Ipswich Journal	21 Sep 1850	Sizewell, near Leiston Sopher and Son Respectfully inform their friends and the public generally, they are instructed to offer for unreserved sale on Thursday, the 26th day of September, 1850. The entire live and dead farming stock, valuable household furniture, brewing, dairy and washing requisites, the property of Mr Joseph Baxter, (declining farming business). The farming stock will comprise two milch cows, handsome heifer, light wagon, good ¾ cart, land cart, foot plough, gang of harrows, capital barley roll with shafts; strong luggage cart, light do. On wood springs, agricultural tools & c. The household furniture includes four-post & tent bedstead, capital feather beds & bedding; mahogany chest with draws, bureau, Chimney and dressing glasses, Kidderminster carpet and hearth rug, mahogany, Windsor and painted chairs, mahogany and Wainscot dining Pembroke, pillar, and card tables; capital eight-day clock, corner cupboard, excellent shot gun, Dollond’s day and night telescope; glass, earthen, stone, and tin wares, fire irons and fenders, copper coal shoot, copper and culinary articles, brewing and washing coppers. The dairy, brewing, and washing requisites consists of Capital half barrel churn, milk keelers, pails, cheese vats &c; three bushel mash-tub, under back and beer casks, water pails and wash-keelers. The whole enumerated in catalogue now in circulation. The Auctioneers respectfully invite an early attendance as the sale will commence punctually at Eleven o’clock.

David Baxter (1774 – 1854)

David spent a short spell in Aldringham. Like his brothers Jonathan and Joseph he settled in Leiston.

The Ipswich Journal	04 May 1844	Alarming fire. On Wednesday morning last, about nine o’clock an alarming fire broke out in a workshop and premises, occupied by Mr John Pettit, carpenter, St Mart Elm Street, in this town …. Several of the surrounding building were scorched, and the window frames and spoils belonging to the house of Mrs Mary Baxter, brewer, were occasionally on fire. Besides the damage done to the woodwork, many panes of glass were destroyed. The brew house of Mrs Baxter was also greatly damaged, besides her brewing apparatus; and she had the misfortune also to lose a whole brewing of beer. Her loss will amount to about £30.

William spent some time in the army, before returning to Framlingham to raise his family.

William married Susan Welch (Welsh) (1790 – 1839). From the parish registers of St Margaret, Norwich:

Parish Records

Framlingham: A Settlement examination was held on the 30th December, 1811 for William Baxter, private soldier in the Royal Artillery Drivers. Military records show he enlisted in 1805 and was discharged at about the aged of 27 (29) on 28th September, 1814, having served eight years and 269 days. The Settlement examination was held twenty days after his marriage to Susan, presumably to ensure that Susan could reside in Framlingham. William and Susan’s first child was born in 1815.

The Ipswich Journal	26 Feb 1853	Ipswich Police David Baxter was brought up on suspicion of stealing 54 old bricks, the property of Mr Joseph Ablitt Pettit. The prisoner was formerly in the employment of the prosecutor, and the bricks were taken from the old Grammar School yard. It was stated by Mr Geo. Taylor mechanical draftsman, at the foundry. In the parish of St Peter that on Wednesday night, about half past eight as he was preceding past the Alms houses in Foundation Street, he saw a man wheeling a barrow full of bricks. He turn round and saw it was the prisoner, who thereupon rested the barrow on the pavement, blew his nose and looked at the moon. Mr Taylor instantly communicated with the prosecutor, when the prisoner was traced into a yard at the bottom of Foundation Street. The prisoner, who denied the charge altogether was admitted to bail to appear for further examination.
The Ipswich Journal	06 Mar 1853	David Baxter was brought up for re-examination on a charge of stealing 54 bricks the property of Mr J A Pettit, under the circumstance detail in our last journal was adjudged to take his trial at the sessions.
The Ipswich Journal	14 Jun 1854	Assaulted by a husband – David Baxter was charged with having assaulted Charlotte, his wife. The parties appeared to be very excited, and the whole case exhibited the lowest state of morals. The woman said that with the exception of two nights, her husband had not been home for the whole of last week. On Thursday afternoon she found him at a disorderly house, with two woman of the town. She asked him to come home he replied by a threat into execution, then she struck him with an umbrella on the head. Thereupon struck her a blow, which was followed by two from the woman. A scuffle immediately answered, the result of which was that after endangering her leg and arm between the door and doorpost he took her up in his arms and “flung her into the street;” the complaint adding, “that for the snow, my head must have been dashed to pieces of the pavement.” The woman admitted that she had lived with the defendant before they were married, and that the result had been one child, having had two others now grown up, by a former husband. The defendant said, the row commenced at the theatre on Monday might, “Where she began to hang a mob at him.” Upon getting home he had another row with her sons in the course of which, “She up with the poker,” and finished by “pulling the hair of his head.” All he wanted was “to get rid of them boys.” Sergt. Mason said, he was down to the house, and found one of the sons with a poker in his hand threatening to break his father’s head. The eldest was twenty years of age, and both were under the influence of drink. The defendant observed he left the house and did not intend to return until the boys were got rid off by his wife. The magistrates said, they could not interfere, as the woman took the law into her own hands at the commencement, by striking the first blow; adding that they were excessively disgusted at the conduct of the husband.

Framlingham Weekly News	13 Oct 1888	A WOMAN FOUND DEAD AT FRAMLINGHAM An inquest was held on Tuesday afternoon at the Hare and Hounds Inn on the body of Hannah Gilbank, widow, age 48, who was found dead on Monday morning in a field near the Saxmundham Road in the parish of Framlingham before W. Brook, Esq., deputy Coroner… Harriett Baxter, wife of Samuel Baxter, groom, said: Deceased was my sister and the widow of Mark Gilbank. He lived at Walkington, Yorkshire, and died there about eight years ago. Since that time she lived three years in Walkington, 3 1/2 years in Chelsea, and came to Framlingham last August twelvemonth to live with her mother. My mother is an invalid, and now bedridden. She has look peculiar since she came to Framlingham and at times been very low spirited, more so during the last three months. She had wondered about two or three times before. On those occasions she has roamed in the fields, she would not go where anyone saw her. Dr Jones attended her about two months ago, when she was very low and suffered from nervousness. He gave her five bottle of medicine and pills at intervals, but she would not take the medicine regularly as she ought to take it. She refused to go to Dr. Jones for medicine and advice. The last time I saw her alive was on Sunday night at 9.15. I spent a quarter of an hour with her. She lived next door to my house. During that time I talked to her, but she did not answer at all. I told her last thing to heat her mother some milk and take it up to her. She did not reply to it. She did not seem stranger than usual. She was generally quiet. I bid her good night and went in and locked my door. I heard nothing more of deceased. The following morning Mr. Webster called about 7.30 at my house with milk and said a woman had been found dead in one of Mr. Calvin Smith’s fields. I thought at once it might my sister. I set my milk down and went in at the back door of my mother’s house and called four times at the foot of the stairs “Hannah.” I received no answer. I went upstairs at once and saw that no one had lain in her bed. I went up to Webster’s house and told Mrs Webster of the circumstances of the bed not having been slept in, and that I believed the dead woman found was my sister. I told my husband to go and see the body, which I did not see until it was brought home in a tumbril. My husband went and identified the body… Samuel Baxter, of Framlingham, groom said: Deceased was my sister-in-law. She had been low spirited three or four months. I found her about five weeks ago wandering between 9 and 10 at night up Cold hall lane. I heard someone coming to me and I waited and saw it was deceased. I said “So you are out for a walk?” She replied, “Yes.” I accompanied her home. There were two or three others (my wife and wife’s sister) who told her we had been out looking for her. She replied, “Dear me.” That was the only time I had gone looking for her. It was an uncommon thing for to be out, that was why I looked for her. Deceased used to live within a quarter of a mile of the spot where she was found dead on Monday. Whenever I have been in to see the deceased in her mother’s home she seldom spoke to me. There has been no disagreement in the family. When Dr. Jones attended her she said, “No Doctor can do me any good.” He recommended her to take plenty of fresh air. Verdict: “Death from heart disease accelerated by exposure.”

Framlingham Weekly News	03 May 1924	Obituary. The death of Mr. Samuel Baxter, who passed away on Monday after a very brief illness, in his 77th year, removes yet another of those gradually disappearing residents whose most active days were spent in the mid-Victorian period. For many years prior to 1909 the late Mr. Baxter was in the service, as coachman and gardener, of the late Misses Edwards, at the premises in Church Street acquired about a year later by the Conservative Club, and many can recall vivid recollections of his familiar figure, with his flowing golden beard and bright complexion, seated on the “box” of his carriage with the handle of his whip resting on his knee. In his prime Mr. Baxter was recognised as a most productive gardener; for years he exhibited at the annual Farmers’ Club show, and those in competition with him well remember what a formidable competitor they were up against, his name was generally heading the class. He was a recognised authority on everything pertaining to the garden or allotment, and he was often called in consultation by those not so well qualified to solve the ever-present and ever-recurring problems of the garden.

Framlingham Weekly News	23 Apr 1910	Framlingham Marriage – A large congregation assembled at St. Mary’s Church, Debenham, on Tuesday afternoon, to witness the nuptials of Miss Caroline Ellen Page, fourth daughter of the late Mr. Wm. Page and Mrs. Page, of High Street, and Mr George Robert Baxter, only son of the late Mr. and Mrs. S. P. Baxter, of Framlingham. The bride was attired in a dress of ivory satin, richly embroidered, and wore a wreath of orange blossoms and heather, and an embroidered veil. The bridesmaids were Miss Florence Evelyn Page, Miss Mabel Alice Page and Miss Gladys Olive Page (sisters of the bride) and Miss Nora Ellen Fisk. The bridesmaids’ dresses were of vieux rose mousseline satin, trimmed with embroidered silk, and they wore black picture hats trimmed with wisteria. The service was choral, the Rev. W.A. Duke (Vicar) officiating. Mr. Frank Henry Page (brother of the bride) acted as best man. As the bridal party left the church they were pelted with showers of confetti, and the church bells rang out a merry peal. A reception was afterwards held at the house of Mrs. Page, the bride’s mother, and was attended by a large number of relatives and friends. The bride’s going-away dress was of cream cloth, faced with pale blue, and black picture hat trimmed with pink roses. The happy pair, who will spend their honeymoon in Surrey, were the recipients of a large number of presents.
