Tannington
Tannington is a small village 10 miles south of Diss and four miles from Framlingham. The church is dedicated to St Ethelbert, the King of East Anglia and the parish registers date back to 1539.

Samuel Baxter by trade a servant was born in the parish of Tannington in or near the town of Framlingham in the county of Suffolk and was Attested for the 54th Regiment of Foot at Diss in the county of Norfolk on the 28th October 1848 at the age of 17 years and 10 months that after making every Deduction required by Her Majesty’s Regulations, the Service up to this day, which he is entitled to reckon, amounts to 11 years, 9 days…he served abroad – N. America, Gibraltar and East Indies…his having been found unfit for further service.
His character and conduct have been very good, he was in procession of one good conduct badge when he was promoted to the rank of sergeant. He has however been tried by a court martial. (There are no Defaulter Sheets belonging to this man in possession of the Depot)

Mace, was charged by Florence Baxter, wife of Charles Baxter, of Earl Soham, with assaulting her. – the parties are neighbours, and complainant said she was walking along the Brandeston road to meet her child when the defendant came up to her, knocked her down, and pulled her hair; she also threw stones at her, and called her wicked names. – Defendant said the row between them commenced earlier in the day, when complainant called her everything she could think of, and what defendant did was in self-defence. – The case was dismissed, each party being ordered to pay their own costs. |
| Framlingham Weekly News | 18 Feb 1911 | A Mother Neglects her children – Charles Baxter, labourer, Earl Soham, and Florence Baxter, his wife, were summoned for wilfully neglecting their five children. Mr. A. S. Leighton (Messrs. Leighton and Pretty, Ipswich) prosecuted on behalf of the N.S.P.C.C. – Inspector Weatherden, N.S.P.C.C., said he had had the children under his observation for some time. On one of his visits he found one of the children had been scalded, and the female defendant told him she left the child downstairs, and on her return found it had upset a saucepan of boiling milk. The house was in a most filthy state; a few rags on the children’s bed served for bed linen, and the only clean thing he saw was a quilt on the parent’s bed. The woman said the Rector’s wife had lent them it. She admitted her husband gave her 12s per week regularly. Witness saw the man, who said he could not do more for the children as he was out at work all day. – Sarah Watson, a neighbour, said she went in directly she heard one of the children was scalded, and advised the mother to send for the doctor. The child was scalded on the neck and back. Mrs. Baxter became ill a short time after, and witness looked after her and tidied up the house, which was in a terribly filthy state. She enquired of the mother how the child was going on, and was told it was doing splendidly. When she saw the child, however, it was still shockingly blistered, and the other children were in a filthy and verminous state. They were poorly clad, and there was no food or firing in the house. – Henry J. M. Rogers, Relieving Officer, said by order of the Guardians he removed the five children to the Workhouse. The house was very filthy, and quite unfit for human habitation. The children showed unmistakable signs of neglect. The only bedding on the children’s bed was an old piece of carpet. Defendants had never applied to him for relief. – Dr. J. C. Keer, Medical officer of Health, who examined the children after their admission to the Workhouse, referred to their dirty condition, adding that they must have suffered terribly from neglect, especially the one which had been scalded, the neck and back being covered with ulcers. – Both defendants pleaded guilty. The male defendant declined to make any statement. Mrs. Baxter denied that the witness Watson had cleaned her house: she got up one morning early and did it herself. Her home was now perfectly clean; she now had clean linen for the beds and for the children to wear and the home was now ready for them to return. The Magistrates retired, and on their return the Chairman said it was one of the worst cases ever brought before a Court. There were no extenuating circumstances and they decided to send the woman to two months’ hard labour. They blamed the man very much, but they would not imprison him. He would be bound over in £5 for twelve months, and would have to pay the costs, 12s. |

| Nottingham Weekly News | 06 Jul 1907 | Child’s Sudden Death at Brandeston An inquest was held before Mr Walter Brooke, at Brandeston, on Saturday, relative to the death of a child named William Baxter, son of Charles Baxter, of Hill Cottage Brandeston, agricultural labourer, aged 1 year, who died last Thursday morning, June 27th. somewhat suddenly. The mother said the deceased appeared to be in his usual health the day prior to his death previous to putting him to bed, witness took him some food, which consisted of new milk. Witness awoke about two o’clock the following morning. The decease was then crying. She got up and changed his clothing, and laid him down again, after which he shortly went to sleep again. Witness heard nothing of the child until her husband woke her about five o’clock and said he did not like the look of deceased and thought he was dead. Witness thereupon took him up and found he was dead. The deceased had been thin since he was removed from Framlingham to Brandeston, but witnessed did not think there was much the matter with him. She had brought up five other children. Deceased had not a tooth cut, nor had he one coming. Deceased always had a pint of milk in 24 hours and frequently more. Dr. F.D. Nicholson, of Framlingham, who made a post-mortem examination of the body, said that it was extremely emaciated, but all the organs were perfectly healthy. Witness was of the opinion that deceased died from irretention, owing to his being unable to digest his food. The Jury returned a verdict in accordance with the doctor’s evidence. |
