Mutford

Mutford is a settlement 4 miles south east of Beccles and 5 1/2 miles south west of Lowestoft. The area is chiefly agricultural. The church is dedicated to St Andrew and is an ancient building with a circular tower surrounded by an octagonal turret. The church registers date back to Tudor times. The living of St Andrew is a discharge vicarage annexed to the rectory of Barnby.

Fatal Accident at sea – On Monday afternoon shortly before three o’clock, the White Rose fishing lugger, of this port, put to sea, but before she has lost sight of land the wind suddenly chopped around to the NW blowing hard. The sails were set and the spinmaker was caught with great violence, tearing the sails to shreds, and one of the crew, a young man named William Baxter, of Mutford, was knocked overboard, as it was impossible from the seething sea to do anything to save him.
