Baxters of Lowestoft
Lowestoft
Lowestoft named after the words ‘low’ and ‘toft’ is a busy seaside resort and port standing on the river Waveney. Lowestoft ness is the most easterly part of England. The towns prosperity started after 1844 when the harbour was improved and again when Lowestoft became a borough in 1885. Lowestoft’s economy was driven by fishing and boat building. The main catch was herring, which was cured in the town before being shipped around the country. Fishing by sail was replaced by steam. The herring boom came just before World
War I. During both World Wars Lowestoft was a naval port and many of the fishing boats went into Admiralty service. LT 334 Fisher Boy was among the many ‘little ships’ that took part in the Dunkirk evacuation. Lowestoft was also bombed during the World Wars.
The main parish church is dedicated to St Margaret. Built in the thirteenth century it is a perpendicular building. The two other churches are St John (which was pulled down) and St Peter’s Chapel of Ease.
Early Baxters
Lowestoft being a large town is the commercial hub of the area, which may explain the appearance and disappearance of the various Baxter families that lived in Lowestoft during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Wherever possible I have attempted to maintain family groupings. At the end I have provided a list of baptism, marriages and burials which have no family connection to each other.

Edward Baxter (c. 1693 – 1779)
Edward was possibly born in Benacre the son of John and Mary Baxter and the brother of Nicholas Baxter.
Marriage
Edward married three times. His first wife was Elizabeth Simms (d. 1735). From the parish records of Lowestoft St Margaret:

Edward’s second marriage was to Elizabeth Helcoat (1700-?) the daughter of John Helcoat and Barbara Allen. From the parish records of Lowestoft St Margaret:

Jane’s second marriage was to Henry Crowfoot (c.1770 – 1851) possibly the son of Henry Crowfoot and Sarah Nunn, on the 23rd March, 1805, Great Yarmouth.

James joined the Royal Navy.
Greenwich Hospital Entry Book
In 1812, James Baxter a singleman of Beccles, aged 36 was granted a pension. At the time he was suffering from Ascites or Dropsy*. His height was recorded at 5ft 7 and 1/2.
*Ascites – an unusual build up of fluid in the abdonmen or around organs.

Elizabeth married Joseph Gibbs (1780 – 1867) the son of William Gibbs and Sarah Bawcutt. From the parish records of Lowestoft St Margaret:

George was born on the 2nd December 1856, Lowestoft, the illegitimate son of Rebecca Baxter (1838 – 1926). Rebecca in turn was the illegitimate daughter of Rose Baxter (1813 – 1897) the daughter of Davey Baxter and Mary Hilling of Barford, Norfolk. Rose married John Tuttle (1822 – 1902) in 1844. Rebecca married George Herring (1835 – 1892) in 1860.

| The Ipswich Journal | 22 May 1880 | Petty Session Lowestoft Wednesday May 17th Whitsunday Festivities – Frederick Hubbard was charged with being drunk and riotous on the 15th inst. George Blyth Baxter was charged with a similar offence, which was somewhat aggravated by defendant endeavouring to rescue the former defendant from the police. Defendant expressed his contrition and the Chairman said it was well for him the police had not laid a further information against him. Defendant was fined 10s including costs. |
| Eastern Evening News | 18 Feb 1886 | George Blyth Baxter, alias George Herring, carpenter, Lowestoft, was summoned by James Drake, pilot, Lowestoft, for assaulting him at Lowestoft on February 6th. On the night in question about six o’clock the defendant and the complainant were in the bar of the Norfolk Hotel. The defendant was drunk, and he commended quarrelling with another man in the bar. Complainant interfered, and the defendant struck him a very violent blow with his fist, splitting his lip open. The complainant went out of the bar, and got his handkerchief out of his pocket to stop the bleeding. He afterwards returned, and he was again abused by the defendant, who used very bad language. The defendant alleged that the complainant struck him first on the way and applied some objectionable epithets to him. The landlord of the public-house where the affair took place, stated that the complainant was very troublesome, and he was obliged to turn him out on account of his offensive language. He had occasion to leave the bar, and when he returned he found the two men engaged in a scuffle. He did not know who struck the first blow. The witness which the complainant decided to call were at sea, and eventually the magistrates dismissed the case. |

| Lowestoft Journal | 29 Oct 1892 | THE PERILS OF THE SEA. – A young man named James Baxter, son of Mr. Peter* Baxter, of Lowestoft, was drowned on Saturday at sea. Deceased was the deck hand of the smack J. and C., LT 44, belonging to Messrs C. and H. Crews. The vessel, which arrived in Harbour on Saturday evening, left the fishing grounds in the morning and shaped a course for Lowestoft. There was a strong gale blowing from a north-westerly direction, and a heavy sea was running. At about half-past nine o’clock the smack was caught in a “fresh of wind,” and shipped two heavy seas. Baxter was immediately swept overboard, and sank about two lengths astern of the vessel before any effort could be made to reach him. The third hand was also carried off his feet by the water which fell on deck. He first caught the capstan, but failing to secure a firm hold on it, he was knocked over the side of the vessel. Fortunately the man succeeded in grasping the edge of the gangway, and although he had seriously injured his left hand, he managed to hold on until the other members of the crew rescued him from his perilous position. |
*Peter named as the father in error, however, Peter did call his son, born the following January, James.

Harry Walter Blyth Baxter (1886 – 1956)
Harry and his family emigrated to Australia, Harry left first sometime between 1925 and 1927. Daisy (43, housewife), Stella (19, Domestic) and Barbara (14, Scholar) left there home at 22 Florence Road, Pakefield and boarded the Largs Bay setting sail from London to Sydney, Australia on the 4th January, 1927. Sophia married Algernon Oswald Beaumont (1886 – 1959) son of James Beaumont and Anna Maria Riches on the 24th December 1905, at Mutford registry office. The couple later separated and Algernon went on to marry Mary Lilian Coupland-Fitzharris (1883 – 1975), in 1921. It is unclear whether Algernon waited for Sophia to die before he married Mary.

George Henry Baxter (1848 – 187?)
George was the son of Maria Baxter (1822 – 1853). Maria was in turn the daughter of David Baxter (Yaxham, 1786 – 1862) and Mary Oldhouse/Aldhouse (Hardwick, 1748-1864/6). David Baxter married Mary Oldhouse on the 24th October, 1809, Hardwick, Norfolk.

George married Jemima Everett Barber (1850 – 1921) daughter of Rachel Richards and the step daughter of William Kent. Jemima’s first husband was Henry Barber, whom she marred in Burton-on-Trent, in 1867. She went on to marry Jacob Kent (1854 – 1923) in 1878.
