Burgh, Clopton & Grundisburgh
Burgh, Grundisburgh and Clopton are all situated within a mile or so of each other between three and five miles from Woodbridge. The church at Burgh is dedicated to St Botolph and the church registers date back to 1547. The church is situated on the top of a steep bank believed to be an iron age enclosure. Separated by a few fields is the church at Clopton which is dedicated to St Mary the Virgin, the church registers date back to 1735. The church at Grundisburgh is also dedicated St Mary, the church registers date back to 1540. The church has an eighteenth century, red brick tower.

In the name of God, Amen. I James Loom of the Parish of Burgh in the County of Suffolk Farmer being of sound mind and memory Do hereby declare this to be my last will and Testament dated this tenth day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand and eight hundred and twenty-one and as touching such worldly Estate where with it hath pleased Almighty God to bless me with in this Life I give devise and bequeath of the same in the following manner and form First it is my will and desire that soon as maybe convenient after my decease that my Executor and Executrix herein named do pay and discharge all my just debts and Funeral Expenses and also all expenses touching the proving or otherwise concerning this my Will then I give devise and bequeath unto my niece Honour Loom of the parish of Grundisburgh in the said County of Suffolk the sum of Forty Pounds and I also give to the company of Clopton Ringers the sum of Fifty shillings to be parted and divided between them at the discretion of my Executor and Executrix and I also give devise and bequeath unto Elizabeth my beloved wife all my household Furniture Clothes, Linen, Plate, Books and all other moveables solely at her own Will and disposal of and I also give devise and bequeath unto Elizabeth my said beloved wife the sum of Two Hundred Pounds principal money to be punctually paid to her out of my Personal Estate at two months after my decease and after paying and discharging all my just debts, Funeral and Testamentary Expenses Legacies and bequests herein before mentioned I give devise and bequeath unto Elizabeth my said beloved wife all the Interest or Income arising or producing from my then remaining personal Estate to be appropriated solely to her maintenance support and disposal of during the Term of her natural life and after the decease of Elizabeth my beloved wife I give devise and bequeath unto my nephew John Loom of the Parish of Burgh aforesaid Farmer and to his sister Hannah my niece the wife of William Mayhew of the Parish of Coddenham in the County aforesaid and to my nephew David Baxter of Burgh in the County aforesaid Cordwainer all the remaining property to be equally parted and divided between them share and share alike But should the decease of either of my nephews or nieces herein before mentioned happen during the Life of Elizabeth my said beloved wife without leaving lawful issue It is my will that my nephew or niece so deceased during the life of Elizabeth my beloved wife without leaving lawful issue as before mentioned the part or share herein before devised and bequest unto my nephew or niece so deceased without leaving lawful issue as aforesaid shall devolve unto Elizabeth my said beloved wife to be solely at her own will and disposal of and I do hereby nominate constitute and appoint Francis Buttrum of the Parish of Burgh aforesaid Miller Executor and Elizabeth my beloved wife Executrix of this my last will and Testament and it is my will and desire that the said Francis Buttrum my Executor should be paid all reasonable expenses for his trouble touching or proving or otherwise concerning this my will and I do hereby utterly revoke disannul and disallow all and every other former will bequests or legacies by me at anytime before made satisfying this my will contained in this one sheet of paper and no other as my last will and Testament in witness whereof I James Loom the Testator have hereunto set my Hand and Seal the day and year first above written

Marriage
Sarah’s first marriage was to James Fisher (1775 – 1819) son of John Fisher and Philippa Johnson, on the 22nd August, 1800, Grundisburgh. James drowned in the River Deben and was buried Woodbridge Beaumont Baptists on the 5th September, 1819.
Sarah’s second marriage was to John Ledger (c.1786-1864). From the parish registers of St George Bloomsbury:

I have not been able to locate a baptism for David and he was not baptized in Burgh. Two of the witnesses at his marriage were David Baxter (1813 – 1894) grandson of William Baxter (1760 – 1843) and Lucy Baxter (1818 – 1840) granddaughter of John Baxter (1755 – 1835). David was clearly family, but to which branch he was from I do not know.

Mr Churchyard appeared for the plaintiff; Mr. Head (from Mr. Pollard’s office, Ipswich), for the defendant. The defendant pleaded the statute of limitation. It was contended on the part of the plaintiff that it was a running account, commencing in March, 1854, on which several payments were made on account, from time to time, so as to bring the debt out of the statue; and much time was occupied by his Honour examining the several items in the plaintiff’s book. His Honour said it appeared to him that the several payments made, ever since March 4, 1854, were for good subsequently had, and for grinding done, because Mr. Buttrum had refused to give further credit, and therefore he was of opinion that the statute must take effect. Judgement for defendant. |

Inquisitions before Mr. Wood, jun. Corner for the Liberty of St Etheldred …On Monday late at Burgh, on the body of Francis Leech who died in that parish on the Saturday preceding, it was proved by several witnesses, that on Friday evening the 6th inst the deceased and William Baxter of Burgh, labourer fought in the parish of Grundisburgh for an hour and forty minutes and that Leech was carried home insensible after the battle and never spoke again. Mr Steggall of Grundisburgh surgeon attended him very early the next morning and immediately bled him; he attended, and again bled Leech at a subsequent hour, but he died about twelve O’clock that day his head and body were afterwards opened by Mr Steggall, who found a considerable quantity of extravasated blood on the left hemisphere of the brain, which he deposed to have been cause of death. The Jury, after an investigation of several hours, being unanimously of opinion, that Leech died in consequence of a blow received from the said William Baxter returned a verdict of “Manslaughter” against him and he was accordingly committed by the Coroner of Ipswich Goal, for trial at the next Assizes. Baxter bore evident marks of a very severe beating, having two black eyes, and numerous wounds. These young men fought in consequence of a quarrel at Whitsuntide; and the endeavours of the bye-standers to put an end to the fight, were several times unavailing. |

The bankrupt in this case also attributes his failure to having incurred liabilities on behalf of John Hart Bridges, of Ipswich. The adjudication was founded upon the fact of the bankrupt’s effects having been seized and sold under an execution by the Sheriff of Suffolk, the petitioning creditor being Mr. James Pringle Barclay, of Wickham Market, gentleman. The creditors comprise:- The Ipswich Mutual Benefit Society (No.20), £120 17s: ditto, £60 18s.; the Wickham Market Mutual Benefit Society (No. 6) £105; Messrs. Catchpole and Co., Brewers Ipswich £85 4s 3d.’ Messrs Mills, Bawtree, and Co., bankers, Colchester, £100; John King, farmer, Otley, Suffolk, £190 (holding mortgage on three acres of land at Ashbocking, estimated value £160); Henry Cuthbert, merchant, Diss, £24; William Buttrum, Swilland, miller, £16 18s 4d., and for rent, £25; and Mr J.P. Barclay (the petitioning creditor), £72 2s. The assets are stated at about £30. Several proofs of debts were admitted, but no discussion took place, and Mr. J.P. Barclay, of Wickham Market, gentleman (the petitioning creditor), was chosen trade assignee. Mr F. B. Jennings, of Ipswich, and Messrs Lewis, Munns, & Co., of Old Jewry, are the solicitors under the proceedings. The meeting for the examination and discharge will be held before Mr. Commissioner Winslow, on the 3rd of March, at One, the usual renewal of protection being granted to the bankrupt. The proceedings then terminated. |

*Rachel was recorded as the mother of a son, who was baptized at Nacton and his birth was registered under the name of David. After this, I can find no mention of David, instead Harry as the family calls him or Henry as he calls himself appears. I can find no birth registered for a Harry or Henry Baxter, but have found a baptism for a Henry David supposed son of Robert and Rachel Baxter. In 1851 Harry, 5 years, was living with his Grandparents, who states that he was born in Nacton. This fits as the above David would have been around five and a half at the time, and the workhouse for the Woodbridge area was situated in Nacton. I strongly suspect that David/Harry/Henry are the same individual, for some reason his family changed his name.

| The Ipswich Journal | 06 Aug 1898 | Mysterious Drowning in Ipswich Carter Found in the Gipping The Ipswich Borough Coroner was engaged yesterday afternoon, at the Higher Grade School, in investigating the death of John Baxter, aged 54, a carter, of 33, Newton Street, whose body was recovered from the Gipping on Thursday evening. The widow deposed that her husband left home about a quarter to five the previous day, after being indoors all the afternoon. Prior to leaving he kissed her youngest son, and said “Good-bye.” He asked to allow him to shake hands with her, and she replied “Nonsense.” She believed he accidentally fell into the river, as he had never threatened to destroy himself. Formerly he was in the employment of Mr T Whitehead, contractor, but he had not been in work for the past fortnight. He had been very much depressed on account of his goods and effect having been taken in payment of rent, under a distress warrant, the amount in question being 35 s. They had to quit the house next Monday. In reply to a Juror, witness said she had not noticed anything strange in deceased’s manner. He gave no reason for shaking hands with her. Arthur Barker Welham, labourer, Handford Cut, deposed that about 5.30 on Thursday evening he met deceased near Portman’s Walk, which leads down to the Handford Lock gates. Witness asked him if he had anything in hand (meaning employment) and deceased replied, “No, the world is using me very rough.” He added, “I have only misery to live for, and I shall not stand it any longer than tonight.” They then separated. About six o’clock witness was told that a man had been taken out of the river, and going to the Handford Lock gates he found that it was the deceased. George William Potkins, labourer, 7, Little Gipping Street, said he was going along the towing-path, in the direction of Handford Road, when he saw the deceased standing in about six feet of water, close to the bank. Witness reached over and raised his head above the water. He tried to lift him out, but he was too heavy, and he called for assistance. When deceased was dragged on to the towing path there were no signs of life, but the body was warm, and artificial means of restoring life were resorted to, without effect. Henry Calver, labourer, 48, Curries’ Lane, was working at the West End Bathing-place when he heard the last witness call out, and with a crome the deceased’s body was pulled on to the bank. Sergeant Emmerson, of the Borough Police Force, having given evidence, Mr F. R. Anness, surgeon stated that death was due to drowning. The Coroner, in summing up, said he apprehended that the Jury would have no doubt that the deceased died from drowning. The question that they would have to consider was whether the deceased was able to distinguish between right and wrong at the time of his death. They must not overlook deceased’s conversation with the second witness a short time before his death, but probably the safest verdict would be one of “Found drowned.” The Jury returned a verdict of “Found drowned.” |

It appeared that defendant offered to fight anyone in the village for a “bob”. The challenge was not accepted, but the defendant took offence at a remark by complainant, and struck him violently on the head. He also threatened to “do” for him “if he swung for it.” Fined 6s and costs £1 2s 6d. |

| Jul 1937 | DEATH OF MR. JAMES DAVIES BAXTER OF BURGH Mr. Baxter, of The Forge, Burgh, passed peacefully away at his residence on Friday of last week at the age of 87 years. The funeral took place at Grundisburgh Baptist Chapel on Saturday last. He was a native of Burgh, and had resided in the parish all his life. The deceased was a farrier and general smith, and was recognised for miles around as a skilled craftsman in every branch of the trade. He delighted in taking part in horse-shoeing competitions at agricultural shows. Mr. Baxter has also been a keen gardener, and was greatly interested in all local flower shows, at which he used to be a regular exhibitor. Always outspoken, yet he gained the respect from all with whom he came into contact. Until five and a half years ago he was a regular attendant at Grundisburgh Chapel, but illness prevented this custom. The service was conducted by Pastor Randall of Otley, in the absence of Pastor Prime. The deceased’s favourite hymns, “The King of live my Shepherd is” and “My rest is in heave,” were sung by the request of the family. Four sons and five daughters of the late Mr. Baxter attended the funeral, the remaining daughter, Mrs Gray, of Shepperton, being prevented by indisposition. Many other relatives and friends were at the ceremony to pay their last tribute of respect. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. William Cook, of Grundisburgh. |

| The Ipswich Journal | 18 Apr 1871 | Ipswich Petty Sessions Assault.-George Baxter was charged with assaulting Herbert Knights, on the 13th inst. Herbert Knights said, on the night in question he was in the Mulberry Tree Inn, and defendant came in from another room with some porter in his hand, and asked a girl living there to drink with him. She refused, and he then called her names and otherwise insulted her. Witness interfered, and asked him what he meant by it, and defendant, after asking him to fight, struck him in the face. Anna Hayward said, she was sitting in the kitchen of the Mulberry Tree Inn with the prosecutor, and heard defendant with a lot more young men in the bar using most filthy language. She rose and shut the door. Soon afterwards the defendant came in and offered to drink with her. She refused and he then began to call her names again. The prosecutor then told him to leave off, but defendant challenged him to fight, and ended by striking him in the face. Defendant was drunk at the time. The Defendant, who is an omnibus driver at the White Horse Hotel, said, in defence, that he asked the girl to drink in a friendly manner, but she refused and he did not like it. Prosecutor interfered while he was talking to her, and threatened him with a knife, saying he would “rip up his —-,” and he then struck him saying that it was not English to fight with a knife. By the advice of the Magistrates the case was settled out of Court. |
