Baxters of North Cove

North Cove

Before examining the history of the Baxter family living in North Cove, I should give a brief description and demographics of the place. North Cove is a small settlement on the road between Beccles and Lowestoft around St Botolph’s church, the Three Horseshoes pub and scattered farms. The village street consists of a handful of buildings. The St Botolph’s church was built in the Norman times, with a thatched roof and square tower. Inside are paintings daring from the 13th Century representing scenes from the Passion, the Ascension and the Day of Judgment.

Below are some figures on the number of houses and inhabitants of North Cove:

North Cove St Botolph's

Early Baxters

It is said that many Baxters in this region of Suffolk can trace their ancestors back to one Nicholas Baxter, yeoman, who is buried in the church yard of St Botolph's church. Nicholas is believed to be the son of the Rev Samuel Baxter and the Grandson of the Rev Nathaniel Baxter, who in turn is descended from the Rev Anthony Baxter rector of North Cove from 1593 to 1611.

Rev Anthony Baxter

Education

According to local belief the Rev Anthony Baxter received a BA from St. Andrews University. Having examined the ‘Early Records of the University of St Andrew: The Graduation Roll 1413-1579 and the Matric Roll 1473-1579. Transcribed and edited by J.M. Anderson, I found the following record:

"1573
Viceimus tertius Rectoratus Magistri Joannis Duglasii,
Praepositi Novi Collegii Mariani, 1572
Nomina Incorporatorum hoe anno in Mariano Collegio
Matriculation Roll
Dominus Andreas Baxter"

This states that Andrew Baxter received his matric in 1573. This does not mean that Anthony Baxter did not attend St Andrews University, but I can not find him graduation between 1413-1579.

Employment

Rev Anthony Baxter was not the first Baxter rector in the area, that honour goes to Hugh Baxter who was rector of Gisleham from 1409 to 1435. Gisleham is a small village 4 miles east of North Cove. Unfortunately, the registers of St Botolph’s dates from 1696, the church was for a long time joined to that of Willingham St Mary and it is believed the original registers were lost when St Mary’s fell into disrepair in the 1600s. So it is unclear whether North Cove was the first, last or one of several benefices the Rev Anthony Baxter could have been employed at.

Villages to the east and west of North Cove would suggest that there were Baxter families present at the time that Anthony was rector.

One mile west is of North Cove is the village of Worlingham. According to Boyd’s marriage index:

Henry Baxter married Frances Gay 1591
John Baxter married Margaret Gay 1597

From the parish registers come the following baptisms:

Born Child and Parent/s Names
22 Jun 1544 Thomas Baxtyr son of John
31 Dec 1561 Henry Baxter son of John
25 Jan 1578 Elizabeth daughter of Henry & Alice Baxter
04 Dec 1580 Anne daughter of Henry & Alice Baxter
25 Mar 1582 George son of Henry & Alice Baxter
12 Jan 1583 Richard son of Henry & Alice Baxter
27 Feb 1585 Alice daughter of Henry & Alice Baxter
25 Feb 1587 Thomas son of Henry & Alice Baxter
22 Mar 1589 Edward son of Henry & Alice Baxter
16 Oct 1597 Anne daughter of John & Margaret
04 Mar 1598 Franucis son of John & Margaret

One mile and half east of North Cove is the village of Mutford. From the parish registers come the following baptisms:

Born Child and Parent/s Names
09 Feb 1606 Joseph son of Gyles & Agnes Baxter
31 Mar 1611 Margaret daughter of Giles & Anne Baxter
02 Jan 1612 Anne daughter of Giles & Anne Baxter
06 Feb 1616 Dina daughter of Giles & Anne Baxter

Tantalizing whatever happened to these Baxter families of Worlingham and Mutford are unclear. The parish registers continue, but without reference to these families.

Rev Nathaniel Baxter (c. 1632 – 1697)

According to the records of Cambridge University Nathaniel was born in Astle, Chelford, Cheshire (c. 1632-1697). I’ve been unable to locate a christening for this man in Astle or Chelford, but my research has shown Baxter families of yeoman stock living in Astle and the surrounding area. There was a Nathaniel Baxter baptized 24 June 1632, Alderley,Cheshire, the son of William Baxter and Ellen Stanley, this could be him, but further proof would be required.

Education

Nathaniel was schooled in Manchester and entered Jesus college Cambridge in 1653. He received the following qualifications:

Matric 1653
Scholar 1655
BA 1656
MA 1660

Employment

Having graduated from University in 1660 Nathaniel’s first job was vicar of St Michael-On-Wyre, Lancashire. 1660 also saw the restoration of Charles II and the religious beliefs of Charles and the monarchs that followed him were to affect Nathaniel’s working life. Charles’s return saw the reestablishment of the Church of England and the restoration of the old Prayer Book services. Legislation was quickly passed in the Corporation Act (1661); the Act of Uniformity (1662); Conventicle Act (1664) and the Five Mile Act (1665). The aim was to exclude non-conformists from any power in central or local government and to fine those who did not attend a church of England service. Nathaniel was among 1,760 ministers ejected from their posts as dissenters. He was ejected from St Michael-On-Wrye in 1662.

Nathaniel headed east to Yorkshire where he became the Chaplain to Sir William Middleton of Adwick Hall, Rotherham. The Rev Nathaniel (or Nathaniel) is mentioned in conjunction with the Rev Richard Taylor, the pair were said to have assisted the Rev Robert Durant in his pastoral work. Durant came to prominence in 1666 as the non-conformist pastor for the Sheffield area after the death of the Rev James Fisher.

Nathaniel later (c.1668) became the chaplain to Edward Pegge Esq (1622-1679) of Beauchief, Derbyshire. He was paid £16 p.a. to preach at Beauchief Abbey, which he did so for seventeen years until the death of Edward Pegge. Edward’s son Strelley Pegge dispensed with Nathaniel’s services for the fear of the sever penalties and fined dealt out to non-conformists under the reign of James II (1685-1688). James II was even more conservative in his religious out look than his brother Charles II. There was real anxiety in the country that James would convert to Catholicism and there would be the return of burning heretic as in the reign of Mary I (1553-1558). In 1687 James passed a declaration of Indulgence, an act of tolerance to dissenters. Strelley Pegge offered Nathaniel £30 p.a. to return to preach at the Abbey, an offer Nathaniel rejected preferring instead to preach where he could in Derbyshire and the South of Yorkshire area, earning in the region of £4 a month.

Marriage

Nathaniel married Rebecca Hirst (baptised 19 Sep 1647 ) of Dalton parva, the daughter of Nathaniel Hurst and Rebecca Revell.  From the parish records of Wickersley:

"Nathaniel Backter, clerk of Beauchiffe Abby and Rebecca Hirst of Daulton parva were marryed by a licence May the 19 1669"

Children

Nathaniel and Rebecca had the following children:

Born Baptized Name Comment Where

Death

Also from the parish register of St Peter’s Sheffield was the burial of

"Nathaniel Baxter gent. of Attercliffe, 15 September 1697 "

No age given, however Cambridge University suggests the age of 65. However I did find the following entry.

"Mr Matthew Baxter of Attercliffe a N.C. Minr dyed Sept 12 1697 aged 60"

With the dates so close I wonder if they could be one in the same person.

Rev Samuel Baxter (1670 – 1740)

Employment

Samuel’s name first appears in the book, "The History of Congregationalism." By T.J. Hoskens. Hoskens names him as the eldest son of Rev Nathaniel Baxter. Samuel was a minister first at Framlingham, before moving to Lowestoft in 1698 to preach at the Congregational chapel. Depending on who you believe Samuel moved to Ipswich either in 1701 or 1703 to the Presbyterian Chapel, St Nicholas Street Ipswich. He was minister there for 39 years.

Children

There are two mentions of a Samuel Baxter in the parish registers of Lowestoft St Margaret

Baptized Name Relationship Parent/s
04 Dec 1698 Hannah daughter of Mr Samuel Baxter and Susanna

Buried Name Relationship Parent/s
12 Jan 1699 Hannah daughter of Mr Samuel Baxter and Susanna

The use of ‘Mr’ is unusual in parish records and I wonder whether this refers to the fact that this Samuel was a gentleman.

Nicholas Baxter (1698 – 1774)

Nicholas would appear not to be the son of Rev. Samuel Baxter, but of John and Mary Baxter of Benacre. Nicholas was baptised the 29th October 1698 , Benacre. He may have had four brothers Edward (1693 - 1779), Richard (d.1774), Barnabas (d. 1774) and Benjamin (d. 1774). Nicholas possible had three sisters: Sarah who married John Beals 1719, Pakefield; Margaret who married Thomas Colby 9th February 1723, Carlton Colville; And Mary who married Henry Duigodary 1725, Pakefield.

Marriage

Nicholas Baxter first appears in the parish registers of All Saints & St Michael Pakefield on his marriage to Elizabeth Aldred on the 5th October 1724. Pakefield is a small village by the sea, one mile South of Lowestoft.

Children

Nicholas and Elizabeth had the following children:

Born Baptized Name Where

Kirkley is a small village one mile south west of Lowestoft. Nicholas and Elizabeth were not the only Baxter family having children baptised at Kirkley. These were:

Richard and Mary Baxter

15 Jan 1734 Elizabeth Kirkley parish church

12 Dec 1737 Hannah Kirkley parish church

Barnabas married Hannah Balls 5th October 1730, Wangford. His second marriage was to Elizabeth Pap 28th April 1743, Pakefield.

Since these Baxter families are having children at a similar time and even having children baptised on the same day, would suggest they are from the same generation, similar age and quite probably related to each other.

A list of contributors towards the rebuilding of Kirkley church C 1750 includes a reference to "Mr N Baxter of North Cove £2 2s 0d" under the listings of Henstead and Sotterley. The sum was fairly large for the time. Henstead is a small village one mile west of Kirkley. It is possible that Nicholas was in the village of Henstead when he gave his donation which would explain his listing there.

Thomas Tripp (1715-1783) a sailor, married Margaret Spicer (23 Feb 1752). The coupe had a son James Spicer Tripp (1754 - 1812). James married on 14 Nov 1785, (Lowestoft) Susanna Baxter (1762 – 1807). I would suspect that Susanna is related to Nicholas.

Second witness

Robert Reeve gentleman of Lowestoft. The Reeve family married into the Tripp family and also had connections to the Aldred family.

Third witness

Francis Mighells (1754 - ?) the son of Thomas Mighells and Elizabeth Durrant. The Mighells were a fishing family famous in Lowestoft. Francis’s sister Elizabeth (1750 – 1804) married William Baxter another potential relative to Nicholas. The couple had four children: Sarah Baxter (1777); William Baxter (1780-1798); Joseph Baxter (1783); And Samuel Baxter (1786)

It is very difficult to know for sure what happened to the daughters. Mary Baxter possible married Richard Robson of Worlingham 15 Oct 1752. The marriage takes place there, but Mary is described at being from Ellough. Ellough is a village very close to Henstead and Sotterley where Nicholas is described as being in around 1750 when the parish church of Kirkley was being rebuilt. There is also a marriage between Mary Baxter and Henry Reager 05 May 1765, North Cove. The first Elizabeth born in 1729 died the same year and was buried in Kirkley, the second one possible marries Philip Larter of Beccles 31 December 1761, like Mary above this Elizabeth is described as being from Ellough. Sarah Baxter possible marries John Ward 2 Apr 1768 Pakefield by licence. Samuel Baxter marries a year later at the same church. What happened to Martha Baxter is a mystery.

Sudden Death – On Tuesday last an inquest was held before F.B. Marriott, Esq. Coroner, at the Swan Inn, in this parish, on the body of Jemima Baxter.  From the evidence it was proved that the deceased had for several years past been troubled with shortness of breath, and subject to bleeding from the nose and mouth.  She was worse than usual on Sunday afternoon, and ate scarcely anything.  About half past seven she was sitting in a chair when she expired.  She had no medical attention.  Mr Samuel Smith, Surgeon, Carlton Colville, said he had examined the body of the deceased, and found no unnatural appearance; the legs were dropsical.  From this and the pain in the chest and shortness of breathing, he was of the opinion that her heart was diseased.  The body exhibited no appearance to induce him to think death resulted from other than natural causes.  Verdict “Natural Death.”

John Baxter (1805 – ?)

As far as I can tell John never married, he did cohabit with Mary Jewell Doy a married woman. In the 1830s John moved to Wells Next The Sea and he died between the 1851 and 1861 censuses. Mary moves to Lowestoft where she dies.

John cohabited with Mary Jewell Doy (1806 - 1886) the daughter of John Mason and Mary Rowe. On the 9th July 1822 at just 16, Mary married John Doy at the parish church of Wells Next The Sea. For whatever reason the marriage failed. It is unclear whether William baptized at the parish church of Barnby was the son of John Doy or John Baxter.

Children

John and Mary had the following:

Born Baptized Name Occupation Where

*Note at the bottom of the register reads as follows, "The mother most improperly wanted to be the wife of Baxter the child's father. Whereas she only cohabits with him her husband Doy being still living".

Inquest – An inquest was held at the Horse Shoe Inn, on Saturday, before C. W. Chaston, Esq. County Corner, touching the death of Charles Baxter, aged 69 years.  Barbery Woods, widow, Mutford said : I knew the deceased well, and to the best of my knowledge he enjoyed good health.  I last saw him alive between eight and nine o’clock Tuesday evening; he was at the Horse Shoe Inn, and had a pint of beer, but was not worse for drink.  Mr Sampson, the landlord, asked him to lead someone’s horse out ready for him to start and decease was, I suppose, returning to the house just as I was leaving it.  When close by me he dropped down suddenly in the road, and I stooped down, and finding he neither moaned nor groaned, said I believed he was dead.  Samuel Barber, and others came out of the house, lifted him up and laid him down again close by the house, where he remained until Mr Crowfoot, who was sent for at once, arrived, which was in about an hours time.  Deceased was not excited.  Mr Edward Bowles Crowfoot, Surgeon, Beccles, said: I was asked to see deceased on Tuesday night, and went at once, and found him lying outside the house as described.  He was dead; his complexion pale and placid as if death had been very sudden and without struggle.  I am of opinion, from external examination I made of the body, and from evidence that death was probably caused from heart disease.  The jury returned a verdict in accordance with this testimony.

Alleged Serious offence By Dutch Fisherman
A Lowestoft crew fired on at sea
On Monday morning the Nil Desperandum, a lugger belonging to Mr. Baxter, of Lowestoft, came into harbour, the master and owner reporting that at midnight on Saturday his nets were cut by an Ostend trawler, and that he and one crew pursued the trawler in a boat in order, if possible, to ascertain its name and number.  When within 30 yards of the trawler they saw two of the trawler’s crew come up out of the cabin with firearms, and almost immediately afterwards the occupants of the small boat were fired at by one of the trawler’s crew.  They directly fell to the bottom of the boat, and while there saw the other man come to the side of the trawler with his gun in hand, intending also to fire.  They however lay still and allowed the boat to drift away in order to escape from the trawler, and thus preserve their own lives.  The master reported the case to the Collector of Customs, who has forwarded the particulars to the proper authorities.  During Monday afternoon a telegram was received from Mr De Canx, of Yarmouth, to the effect that the nets of the Three Sisters, of Lowestoft, Mr G Cutting, owner, had been picked up by a Dutch boat “Ky., No 2.”  Considerable feeling is being manifested by the fisherman at the repeated attacks to which they have been subjected by the foreigners, and some of the boats have gone to sea armed in self-defence.
