Baxters of Carlton Colville

Carlton Colville

Carlton Colville village between Beccles and Lowestoft. The church is dedicated to St Peter and is a square embattled church. The old church registers were destroyed by fire and the earliest records date from 1715. Carlton Colville currently has four pubs the Carlton Manor, The Bell Inn, The Crown and The Old Red House.

Carlton Colville St Peter

Early Baxters

Baxters populated Carlton Colville in a sporadic occasions and very few settled in the area for any length of time. The first occurrence of the Baxter surname comes on the marriage register.

" 16 April 1722 Thomas Colby of Lowestoft and Margaret Baxter of Eye, England were married by licence."

There are three places called 'Eye' in the country one of which is in Suffolk. Margaret dies in 1731.

Richard Baxter (d. 1747)

The next mention of a Baxter was Richard Baxter and he was a potential brother to Nicholas Baxter of North Cove. None of his children are registered as being baptized in Carlton Colville.

Marriage

Richard married Mary Botwright (d. 1795) From the parish registers of Carlton Colville:

"Richard Baxter single man and Mary Botwright widow, both of this parish were married by banns September 19th 1725 ."

After Richard's death Mary married Simon Godard/Goddard (d.1756). From the parish registers of Wenhaston:

"Simon Godard widower and Mary Baxter widow were married April 7 1751."

Children

Richard and Mary had the following:

What happened to the children of Richard Baxter and Mary Botwright?

Mary Baxter (1726 - ?)

Marriage

I believe it is this Mary that married Edward Richman/Richmon/Richmond. From the parish registers of Gunton

"Edward Richmond and Mary Baxter both single of this parish of Gunton were married by banns November 6 1746."

Richard Baxter (1729 - 1774)

Marriage

Richard married Philippa/Phillis Ashby (d.1778) maiden name Mapes. From the parish registers of Langley, Norfolk:

"Richd Baxter single man and Phillis Ashby widow, both of Geldston were married by banns August 29 1750. "

Philippa's first husband was John Ashby (d.1749). John was buried in October 1749, and Richard Ashby, his posthumous son with Philippa was baptized in June 1750, and she married Richard Baxter two months later. I am not sure if this is why there is a subtle change in her christian name.

Children

Richard and Philippa had the following:

*No surname was given with this burial. There is no evidence that Barnaby survived childhood, so this could be his burial record.

James Baxter (1738 - ?)

Marriage

James married Elizabeth Gray, possibly the daughter of Edward Gray and Elizabeth Norman. From the parish registers of Rumburgh:

James Baxter of the parish of Bramfield married Elizabeth Gray of this parish spinster this fifth day of August 1759.

Children

James and Elizabeth had the following:

Baptized Name Comment Where
15 May 1760 James Son of James and Eliza Baxter Parish church of Carlton Colville
16 May 1762 Elizabeth* Daughter of James and Elizabeth Baxter Parish Church of Rumburgh

*Its possibly this Elizabeth who married Samuel Dowson (1755 - 1812) the son of Samuel and Elizabeth Dowson, 01 Jun 1789, Gillingham. Elizabeth Dowson was buried 27 May 1838 aged 76, Aldeby.

What happened to the children of Richard Baxter and Philippa Mapes?

Elizabeth Baxter (1755 - 1838)

Marriage

Elizabeth married William Gillings (1758 - 1845). From the parish registers of Somerleyton

"William Gillens of Corton minor and Elizabeth Baxter of this parish single woman married in this church by licence and consent of parents this eight day of March 1778. In the presence of John Bowgin and John Read. "

Mary Baxter (1755 - ?)

Children

Mary had the following:

Baptized Name Comment Where

Marriage

Mary married Thomas Smith (1755 - ?). From the parish registers of Somerleyton

"Thomas Smith single man of this parish and Mary Baxter single woman of Lound were married in this church by licence this twenty-fourth day of August 1780. In the presence of John Read and Thomas Vincent. "

Benjamin Baxter (d. 1774)

The next Baxter to appear in the parish registers of Carlton Colville is Benjamin Baxter, he too leaves Carlton Colville, possible for Kirkley and then on to Lowestoft. There is a lack of information and I have been unable to work out what happened to his surviving children. A settlement certificate was issued by the church wardens and overseers of the poor of the parish of Carlton Colville to 'Benj Baxter and Mary his wife and all such children as they shall have here after to be inhabitants legally settled in our said parish of Carlton Colville.'

Marriage

Benjamin married Mary Pinkney (c. 1703 - 1773), the daughter of William Pinkney and Elizabeth Smith. From the parish registers of Halesworth:

" 26 June 1738 Benjamin Baxter of Wisset and Mary Pinkney were married."

Children

Benjamin and Mary had the following:

Nineteenth Century Baxters

The Baxters that arrive in Carlton Colville in the nineteenth century came from other Baxter families well established in the area.
