Baxters of Benhall & Sweffling

Benhall & Sweffling

Benhall is a small village a mile and a half from Saxmundham. The village is split in two by the A12, one side is known as Benhall Low Street the other side Benhall Green. Benhall is mentioned in the Domesday Book consisting of a manor belonging to Roger Bigod. The church is dedicated to St Mary and has a flint exterior. Church registers date back to the Tudor times.

Sweffling or Swefling is a village situated on a hill between Framlingham and Saxmundham. The village over looks the river Aide. The church is dedicated to St Mary and is situated in the center of the village. Like Benhall the church has a flint exterior and the church registers date back to Tudor times.

Baxters

The origins of the Baxter families in both Benhall and Sweffling can all be traced back to Framlingham and Kettleburgh.

An agreeable place small freehold residence (with immediate possession) known as ‘Oak Villa’ and numbered 153, Woodbridge Road, Ipswich.  It contains entrance hall, two parlours, store rooms, kitchen scullery, four bedrooms, good cellarage, out offices, shed & c, and has front and back gardens.

Pursuant to an Act of Parliament of the 22nd and 23rd Victoria Chap 35 instituted “An Act of further amend the law of Property and to relieve Trustees.”

Notice is hereby given that all persons having any claim or demand upon the estate of Christopher Baxter, late of Ipswich, in Suffolk, gentleman,(who died on the 29th day of October, 1871, and whose will was proved in the District Registry, at Ipswich, of the court of probate, on 27th day of November, 1871, by John Pells of Ipswich, aforesaid, builder, and Henry Stevens, of Ipswich aforesaid, painter, plumber and glazier, the Executors therein named), and hereby required to send in particulars of their claims and demands to the undersigned solicitors of the said Executors, at their office, No. 41,  Fonnereau Road, Ipswich aforesaid, on or before the 15th day of April next, after which day the said Executors will proceed to distribute the assets of the said Deceased among the parties entitled thereto, having regard only to the claim or demands of which they shall then have notice; and that the said Executors will not be liable for any part of such assets to any Person or Persons of whose claim or demand they shall not then have had notice.

Maria married Thomas Pallant (1804 - 1847) the son of Nathaniel Pallant and Elizabeth Garrod. From the parish registers of Rendham:

"Thomas Pallant of this parish bachelor and Maria Baxter of Starston Norfolk, spinster were married in this church by licence with consent of her guardians this twentieth day of January 1830. In the presence of Jn: Pallant and William Andrews."
